Dr Mark Johnston is Research Fellow at Myerscough College, Lancashire, the national centre for education in arboriculture and urban forestry. He is also Course Leader for its MSc Arboriculture and Urban Forestry.

Mark is a Chartered Arboriculturist (ICF), Member of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), Fellow of the Arboricultural Association and Fellow of the Institute of Horticulture.

He has some thirty-five years industry experience, including working as a contractor, a Tree Officer in local government and consultant in private practice. He has initiated several major urban forestry projects in Britain and Ireland and has worked overseas in the USA and Hong Kong.

He holds a PhD in urban forestry from the University of Ulster and his research interests focus on the social science aspects of urban tree management.

In 2007, Mark received an MBE in recognition of his services to urban forestry. In 2009, he became the first British person to receive the Award of Merit from the ISA, the highest honour it can bestow for service to arboriculture.
